Certainly, our lives are influenced by social conditions, the realities of life that we create together. Conditions such as poverty, wealth or crime and drug use. Economics influence our lives – how we survive depends on whether we have jobs and income, and that so often comes from what societies do with scarce resources such as time, talent, and money. Political institutions influence our lives – the norms and statuses that exercise power and authority. Religion, one of the oldest and complex institutions, influences our lives – how we express our deepest yearnings for spiritual understanding.
Both film and theatre have taken many approaches to issues such as alcoholism, prostitution, public education, racial prejudice, capital punishment, thought control, prison reform, civil equality, political corruption, and military excess. The best of these productions have presented the issues in all their complexity, proffering solutions not as dogma but as food for thought.
